April 2026 • Leadership
We've all had that moment. It usually happens in the car park or in the thirty seconds before your first video call of the day. You take a breath, straighten your shoulders, and "click" into character.
You put on the version of yourself that has all the answers. The one who isn't fazed by market volatility, the one who understands exactly how to integrate the latest AI tools, and the one who never shows a flicker of doubt. You put on your armour.
In 2026, the pressure to be an "invincible" leader is at an all-time high. But there's a quiet truth we rarely talk about in boardrooms: The mask is exhausting. When you spend all your mental energy maintaining a polished persona, you have very little left for actual leadership. This is where the "quiet cracking" begins, not because you aren't capable, but because you're carrying a weight that wasn't meant for one person.
Most of us didn't start out wanting to be "unreachable." We built the mask as a defence mechanism. We've been conditioned to believe that our value is tied to our certainty. If we don't have the answer, we feel like we've failed the "Expert Trap."
But here's the reality: your team already knows you're human. They can sense the tension behind the "perfect" script. When you lead from behind a mask, you aren't building trust; you're building a wall.
Authentic authority isn't about over-sharing or being unprofessional. It's about Human Sustainability. It's the ability to be grounded enough in your own skin that you don't need the armour to feel powerful.
Your team doesn't need a flawless leader; they need a present one. When you stop "performing," you start hearing what people aren't saying. You move from uncertainty to clarity because you're finally dealing with the reality of the room, not the requirements of the script.
Admitting you don't have a perfect answer yet is a massive signal of psychological safety. It gives your team permission to be human, to take risks, and to solve problems alongside you.
Every leader needs a space where the mask isn't required. That's the core of what I do. 1-to-1 coaching isn't just about strategy; it's about having a confidential space to take off the armour and remember why you started leading in the original.
When you have the courage to be seen, doubts and all, the "vibe" of the entire organisation shifts. The silos start to melt. People stop "managing up" and start moving forward. You stop being a figurehead and start being a human being that people are actually proud to follow.
How much energy are you spending on the "performance" of leadership today?
It's time to bring the human back to the centre of the C-suite. If you're ready to trade the armour for authentic growth, let's talk about the person behind the title.
